Hi, I am trying to find information on my paternal grandmothers grandfather. According to the 1851 Census he was 20 years old in Canisbay, Caithness. He is down as being born in Walls, Longhope, Hoy, Orkney Islands. In 1851 he married an Elizabeth Elder in Mey, Caithness. In the 1861, 1871, 1881 & 1891 he is in Thurso latterly as a rural postman. The closet to a death reference we can find is in 1901 in the Royal Asylum in Montrose. He is down as a postman from Thurso however he is down as the widower of Ann Manson which does not fit in with any other information that I have. The parents on the death reference is James Sutherland Whale fisherman & Jacobina Mowat.

James Sutherland born abt. 1830 in Longhope, Orkney, married Elizabeth Elder in Canisbay on 12th December, 1851, is my husband's Grt Grt Grt Grandfather. Just wondered have you got any up to date information on his death as, like you, am surprised to read on his death certificate "Widower of Ann Manson". Not sure if this is the same James Sutherland?
