My grandmother was a Sutherland from Graemsay (Isabella Ann Sutherland b 1880) whose ancestors Henry Sutherland 1754 - ? and Osla Ballentine 1762-1738 came from Walls their son harry moved arounf 1830 to Graemsay |

I am very interested in your connection to Henry (Hendry) & Osla (Oslais) Ballentine (Ballenden). It has been suggested that my furthest past ancestor, Adam Sutherland was the son of the afore mentioned, but I have never been able to verify it. I was wondering if you had any information as to wether Harry had a brother, Adam?

Henry and Osla ( or however it was spoken or spelt!!!) had 10 children accouring to my records a son Adam 1799-1856. The only brother to Henry I have found was a John 1741- ?
I had a look at the information on your other pages and could not see an Orkney connection but as it is work in progress perhaps it will appear in due course.

Left Graemsay with family November 1910 for Russamyre, Orphir following a disagreement with his brother Samuel with whom he shared "Sandside" one family lived upstairs and one downstairs, 24 people in all. No wonder they disagreed!
The family had applied to the landowner for the farm to be divided and he did not agree but replied that the person who could pay a specific sum of money could rent the entire farm. Sams daughter Kitty who was married to Magnus Ritch lent her father the money. Alexander and his brother left and the families stayed apart.

Henry Sutherland came from Walls and Flotta and his parents were William Sutherland and Marion Cromarty.
Osla is a bit of a puzzle :-

I'm helping a friend trace their family history.
I'm wondering if your Margaret hereis the same as this Margaret do you have any further info on Margaret Sutherland. did she move to Edinburgh and marry a Edward Jones? on this Marriage cert1859 Edinbrough. Margaret Sutherland's parents are James Sutherland occupation street porter & Barbara Stewart.
I think I might have Margaret's family on 1841 census in Edinbrugh stating born Orkney.....

The Margaret on the marriage cert was aged 20 in 1859, thus being born in 1839, whereas your Margaret was born in 1828  Sorry! The Margaret on the marriage cert was aged 20 in 1859, thus being born in 1839, whereas your Margaret was born in 1828 Sorry!
