:)I have recently discovered a relation named George Simpson is mentioned on the Naval Memorial Ref. E.91 within Osmondwall Cemetery. He died on 15/10/1915. His unit was listed as H.M.S. Shannon, but so far I have no other information. Can anyone confirm the details on this Memorial ?

Thanks for enquiring. The information that I have of your relative from the Minor Returns is such:-
SIMPSON, George ... Carp. Crew. 343478 (Ch) Royal Navy HMS Shannon
DOB 19 March 1875 Aberdeen
DOD 15 Oct 1915, Cause of Death:3 (?)
Osmondwall New Cemetery, Longhope Orkney
Plot 3, Row 5 Lair 01 (could read "91")
Notified Relative: Mother; Jane . Ashgrove House, Glasgow Road, Port Glasgow
Apart from having a grave, for sure, there is no confirmation that his name is on the Memorial. I am having someone who lives locally have a look, and hopefully she remembers her camera.
I will post back, once I have heard
Thanks
Neil

Great stuff Neil, Many thanks for your prompt reply. This info. is brilliant. I can find no record of a ship HMS Shannon, and can only assume it was some sort of training establishment. no cause of death recorded, I find strange. I look forward to hearing from you again. Roy

HMS Shannon was one of the Minotaur Class. The last class of 'conventional' British armoured cruiser before construction was switched to battlecruisers. Originally the class had very short funnels but these were raised around 1909-1910. They were the only British cruisers with twin 9.2 inch gun turrets.
World War 1 Service: 2nd Cruiser Squadron Grand Fleet. November 1914 refit at Cromarty. 31 May 1916 present at the Battle of Jutland. November 1916 Murmansk. 1917-18 Atlantic convoy escort. 1922 Sold for scrap.
I have seen a picture of it in its "Dazzler" colours, which I will seek out.

Hi Neil, Have just managed to trace the Service Record of George Simpson which details all the ships he served on together with cause of death while aboard "Drina" hospital ship. I am very pleased and will now continued research of the ships. Anything further you come across would be appreciated. I am more that greatful for your assistance and hope to visit Orkney sometime.
