John S. Sutherland Looking for John's Parents
John S. Sutherland was born Dec. 1, 1770 in Parkersburg, Wood Co., Virginia, now West Virginia.
John James Sutherland 1803 - 1890
John James Sutherland was born April 9, 1803 in Parkersburg, Wood Co., Virginia. John James Sutherland and Delilah E Phelps were married May 15, 1826 in Wood Co., Virginia according to the Virginia Marriages 1740-1850. It seems that Delphia died shortly after Lycurgus’s birth, although I have yet to find her death information. John James Sutherland is listed in Wood Co., Virginia with a Mary Elizabeth Kincheloe. Ann A Sutherland at the bottom of 1860 Census is John James Sutherland’s mother she was born Nancy Ann Foley.
I have been researching Lycurgus’s parents. Lycurgus Goodne Sutherland is listed in the Ohio Marriage Book 1800 - 1958 Index #M01210-6, Film #355779, Reference # v3, Pg 182, listing Lycurgus G. Sutherland and Sarah A Hamrick being married on Jan. 11, 1854 in Hamilton, Butler Co., Ohio. According to the Michigan Marriage 1868 - 1925 Database, as transcribed by me, L.G. Sutherland married Sarah J. Brown March 31, 1898 Film #2342510, Image #334, Digital GS #4208266, Reference number v3 pg 490 rn 1489, this document also list his parents as John James and Delilah E. (Phelps) Sutherland. Lycurgus and Sarah J. Sutherland are listed in the 1900 Census of Golden Township, Oceana Co., MI.

Early History of Wood County, West Virginia
Wood County was created by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on December 21, 1798 from parts of Harrison County. According to the national census of 1800, Wood County had 1, 217 residents, the smallest population of the 13 counties then in existence within the present state of West Virginia. Berkeley County, with 22,006 people, was the most populous county.
Wood County was named in honor of James Wood (174701813). He was born in Frederick County, Virginia. In 1763, when he was 16, he enlisted in the military and served as a private during Pontiac’s War. The following year, at age 17, he organized and commanded a company in the expedition against the Shawnee Indians. In 1775, he was elected to the House of Burgesses from Frederick County. He represented Frederick County in the Virginia Convention of 1776 and, later that year, was appointed a Colonel in the Virginia military. He served with distinction during the American Revolutionary War and was named superintendent of the prisoners of war held by the Virginia militia. In 1783, he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General and put in command of the troops defending the border against Indian raids. In 1784, he was elected a member of the Virginia executive council and, by seniority, was the lieutenant Governor of the State. He then served as the Governor of Virginia (1796-1799). He was an ardent opponent of slavery throughout his lifetime and served as President of the society for the promotion of abolition of slavery in Virginia in 1801. He continued as a member of the executive council of Virginia following his governorship. He served on the executive council until his death, on June 16, 1813.
Blennerhassett's Island is situated on the Ohio River, approximately two miles south of Parkersburg. Harman Blennerhassett was born in England to a distinguished and wealthy Irish family, graduated from the University of Dubin, and was a noted attorney and respected scholar. He moved to Marietta, Ohio in 1798 and, being of ample financial means, bought what would be known as Blennerhassett Island and had a nationally famous mansion built for him there. In 1805, Vice-President Aaron Burr, who had killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel in 1804, landed uninvited on the island, but was welcomed as an honored guest. During his three day visit, Burr convinced Blennerhassett to finance an armed force to capture the Wichita territory in the West and, in the event war were to break out between Spain and the United States, to proceed to Mexico. A flotilla of about 20 small ships were constructed at Marietta and in December 1806 the fleet, with 30 well-armed men aboard, set sail down the Ohio River, supposedly toward Mexico. Fearing that the fleet was part of a scheme by Aaron Burr to overthrow the government, Colonel Hugh Phelps, commander of the Wood County militia, was ordered to intercept the ships. Unfortunately, the ships had already left when he arrived at the Blennerhassett mansion. Mrs. Blennerhassett insisted to the Colonel that her husband was not part of a plot to overthrow the government and ordered him and his troops not to disturb her property. The troops ransacked the mansion and the grounds. Burr and Blennerhassett were later captured and transported to Richmond and imprisoned. Burr was tried for treason and was acquitted. Blennerhassett was never brought to trial, but his reputation and standing in the country was ruined. He and his family moved to Europe where he died in 1831. (Note: Colonel Hugh Phelps is the father to Delphia Phelps Sutherland, Lycurgus Goodne Sutherland’s mother)
LYCURGUS Goodne SUTHERLAND
Lycurgus Goodne Sutherland was born Nov 1830 in Woods Co., Virginia, as provided by the U.S. Civil War Union Soldiers Records and his Civil War Pension File. According to a tombstone order document from Lee Marble Works he died June 9, 1901 in Hart Township, Oceana County, Michigan. Lycurgus Goodne Sutherland served in the Civil War, Co D, Reg. 3, State Missouri, Cavalry, entering 1866. I have all the documents proving his service including the document stating he was a deserter and then the document saying he was not a deserter but a disabled serviceman. It would be wonderful to find who has the flag given to the family upon his death. This was proved through the Civil War Pension Files of Veterans who Served Between 1861 - 1900 NARA Publication # T289.
He married SARAH A. H(A)UMERICK 11 Jan 1854 in Butler County, Ohio, daughter of GEORGE H(A)UMERICK and CATHARINE SMITH. She was born 12 Jun 1827 in Frederick County, Maryland, and died 28 Jun 1897 in Hart Township, Oceana County, Michigan. Sarah A Hamerick Sutherland’s death is proved from the Oceana County Courthouse Michigan Death Index as was transcribed by me, Michigan Deaths, 1867-1897 Film #2364222, Digital Folder #4002084, Image # 414, Reference # item 1, pg 32, rn 88. Stating that Sarah Sutherland died June 29, 1897, Hart, Oceana, Michigan at the age of 70 yrs 16 days. She was born in Maryland and her parents were Geo. Hamrick and Catharine Hamrick, her maiden name was Sessler I believe. She is buried next to L.G. Sutherland in South Hart Cemetery, Hart, Oceana Co., MI.

He married (2) Sarah J. Brown, according to the 1900 Census of Golden Township, Oceana County, Michigan Sarah J was born June 1834. This Census states that they have been married for 22 yrs. Marriage date is March 30 1878. This Census also states that she has had six children total with three living as of this census. I have yet to have found the divorce date for Lycurgus and Sarah A. But since she passed away in 1897 and the marrage date of Sarah J is 1834, and the date of the census is 1900 there is no way that they are the same Sarah.
