Hi Neil,
I am looking for a possible Orkney connection with respect to
my 4th GGF, Alexander Sutherland, b. Bef. 1758 "of, Lerwick, SHI". I am attempting to trace his date and place of birth, parents, etc.
Alexander was the parish schoolmaster in Tingwall, SHI from 1801 to 1837 and had a very close relationship with Rev. James Sands b. 28 Sep 1742 at Hoy, OKI ("Minister of Lerwick from 9.9.1767-1793 and afterwards of Tingwall parish until his death" Source: Tony Gott), and his wife, Elizabeth Craigie, b. Bef 1744 Stebbiegrind, d. 5 Mar 1836, such that he named a number of his children after the Rev. Sands and Elizabeth Craigie.
It seems probable that Alexander Sutherland was friends with the Rev. Sands while they were both in Lerwick and Rev. Sands may have been instrumental in Alexander being appointed the Schollmaster at Tingwall.
Their relationship may even have started earlier, in Orkney. and although it is a wild stab, I am wondering whether Alexander may have been born there??
Alexander Sutherland was married three times:
18 Sep 1779 - married Margaret Scott, dau of James Scott in Lerwick. She was born 14 Apr 1742 in Tingwall, SHI and died Abt 1782 in Bressay, SHI. They had one child, George Sutherland, b. 24 Jan 1780, Lerwick, SHI, d. Bef 1841.
3 Oct 1784 - married Margaret Sinclair who died Abt 1797, in Bressay, SHI. They had six children:
1. Margaret b. 25 Jul 1785, Lerwick, SHI
2. Helen, b. 3 Aug 1787, Lerwick, SHI
3. Alexander, b. 21 Sep 1789, Lerwick, SHI - (My 3rd GGF)
4. Catherine, b. 1791, Lerwick, SHI
5. John, b. 13 Oct 1793, Bressay, SHI
6. Clementina Scott, b. 6 Aug 1795, Bressay, SHI
All of these children later moved to Edinburgh where they married and raised their children.
1803 - married Ann Bolt, b. 23 Oct 1774, Lerwick, SHI. They had seven children, several of whom were named after Rev. Sands and his wife:
1. James Scott , b. 7 Feb 1801
2. Sands, b. 31 May 1802
3. Elizabeth Craigie, b. 20 Nov 1804
4. Robina Cranston, b. 5 Jan 1810
5. Williamina Sands, b. 15 Nov 1811
6. Barbara Sands, b. 8 Mar 1815
7. Ann, b. 16 Sep 1817
On his marriage registration, to Margaret Sinclair (1784), he is reported to be a gardener, but on the marriage registrations of several of his children, he is identified as a Parish Schoolmaster in Tingwall, (1801 - 1837) and church records in Tingwall verify that fact.
I realize that "Alexander Sutherland" is not an uncommon name but perhaps you can suggest one or two possible prospects for me to research??
Many Thanks,
- Norman Sutherland
