I hope that i am not on the wrong board, but i can't access the others. Can somebody hlp me as i'm trying to find out where the best place to find birth records for Flotta online are. Ny ggg-grandfather - John Sutherland - came from there, and i think he was born about 1870. Don't know who is parents are. Thqanks, Kelly (Pakenham, Australia)

I have found its very easy to "presume" that an individual is a relative just because there is a person of the "right" age or date of birth!. I suggest to attempt to locate his parents names from his death or marriage record so that when you look for his birth (use www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ for Scottish Records ) that you can be sure its him. An alternative would be to look at the 1871 and 1881 census for Flotta (the Orkney Family History Society sells books of transcribed records or look on line at scotlands people again) |

My grandmother was a Sutherland from Graemsay (Isabella Ann Sutherland b 1880) whose ancestors Henry Sutherland 1754 - ? and Osla Ballentine 1762-1738 came from Walls their son harry moved arounf 1830 to Graemsay

hi Just started this "roots" game, and have been able to trace my maternal line back to Walls & fltta. Sorry, although i'm not a SUtherland, my grandfather was a Norquoy, I am having a problem getting my head around the "walls and Flotta" entries. I came across your site, and I am hoping you could tell me where exactly Walls and Flotta is. I know from searches that it is obviously in the Orkney islands, North Scotland and that Flotta appears as an island there, but where is Walls? Are there any online maps you could recommend to look at? Is it Walls, or is it Wall, as in it is a part of Flotta or is it a part of Wall(s)? where-ever that is. Uzme  |

The "Visit Scotland" for Orkney site gives general information about all the Orkney Islands including Flotta. If you look at Multimap and just search for Flotta a good variety of different scale maps show it. www.multimap.com/Alos in case you have not seen it "Google earth" provides aerial views but not much detail. You will need to key "Hoy, scotland" to search as keying Fotta for some reason takes you to Ayrshire. I think its the way it has been indexed as for some reason the Island my Grandparents came from is on Google earth as "The Hap" not Graemsay NB some Norquoys married Sutherlands!! |

looking at your website i have found out that that robert and marys children one of whitch called mary was my great grandmother,mary married john grigor,who produced children one of them was robert grigor who married millie rogers and between them had nine children one of whitch was roberta grigor who married the late leo wilson.my grandther robert {bob}grigor was a merchant seaman and also a boxer during the forties ,who used the fighting name of ronnie sutherland taken from his mothers side of the family.

Nice to have you dropping by. Are you in contact with Moira, in Yorkshire ... she is Mary's granddaughter. Moira is a bag full of info on the Grigor/Sutherlands.
Mary ( nee Sutherland) Grigor was my grandfather's sister.
The names robert grigor who married millie rodgers are familiar ... did one of them die in a house fire or something in the west coast (Scotland) somewhere?
I will need to look that one out, and get back to you ... but as ever, we are all ears here for any info you may want to share.
I'm going to have a lok for some Grigor pictures and put them up here for you ... so please bear with me

hello neil thanks for the pictures and reply,yes robert died in a house fire in kilcreggan argyle and bute and is buried in cove cemetary argyle and bute millie died of cancer and was creamated in cardross near helensburgh,how would i be able to contact moira is moira posted anything on the fourum,i will look to see if she has,great website with plenty of info hope i can contribute something to it thanks again neil,regards chris

hello neil thanks for that,the picture above on the the left is donald middle is robert who looks very much like marys brother bob the wrestler,on the right is frank who is still alive and staying in maryhill,donald is not living anymore and is buried in cove cemetry,donald was also known as dennis.

The above photo is of my father and his brothers, Robert Grigor stayed across the road from me where he died in a house fire. He was a boxer at one time and boxed under the name of Ronnie Sutherland, I have a print out of six of his fights and the results. My name is Mary Sutherland Walker (nee Grigor). I was named after his mum. If anyone would like to contact me please do. I am sure I have more information on this side of the family.

Hi Mary walker herea question for you is your mums name Molly? If so then your mum was my dads sister. My brother and I were talking the other day about when we stayed in the Gallowgate and we could remember your mum and dad visiting us there. My name is Mary Sutherland Walker (nee Grigor)
